{friday philosophy} cancer sucks

sometimes i come across a quote that bears some kind of significance and i want to share it with you dear readers.  sometimes it's based on where i am in life or a certain event, sometimes a quote just reminds me of a friend, or sometimes it makes me think.

let me just throw this out there:  cancer sucks.  (i think we can all agree on that one.)

it's pretty safe to say that we have all been touched by cancer in some way.  whether you have lost a loved one or stood by them as they fought with all their might or if it was you yourself that received the diagnosis you never thought possible, cancer reaches into the depths of your soul and forces you to rise above.

a friend of mine was recently diagnosed with cancer.  to say that my heart was immediately in my throat with tears flowing would be an understatement.  i was floored by the news and heartbroken for the diagnosis.  you see, my friend ben is more than a friend.  he's the owner of my gym, kdr fitness, he is an incredible coach, he is intelligent, healthy, caring, strong and funny, and he performed our wedding ceremony.  so to me, this diagnosis struck a very sensitive nerve.

after hearing the news, i went through the 'normal' questions to the cancer websites and to the universe: why?

and then i realized that 'why' wasn't as important as 'how'.

how can i help?
how can i contribute to the fight?
how can we move forward in a positive way?

and today i am sad for my friend, but happy for the future...because "at any given moment YOU have the POWER to say THIS IS NOT HOW MY STORY IS GOING TO END."

"you have cancer" is one of the worst things you ever want to hear.  but this is true:  "cancer is not a death sentence, but rather it is a life sentence; it pushes one to live." ~ marcia smith

i feel like life offers us so many powerful lessons and sometimes they come to us in ways we never imagined.  but regardless of where you are or what you're going through, you always have the power to be positive.

ben has started a blog to document his journey kicking cancer's ass...so please check out his first post!  he's a great writer and has a lot of valuable information to share.

and our kdr fitness family, who has proven their love and generosity through many charitable programs we have participated in, will be participating in the relay for life on june 4th.  if you'd like to make a contribution to our team, visit our page!  every dollar counts!  all proceeds go to cancer research, lobbying efforts by the american cancer society's cancer action network (acscan), wig programs, travel aid, camps, etc.

thank you for helping us fight the good fight.

f*ck cancer!
